best of ’10
Looks like we've made it through another year at the office....time to nerd out, here's my fav songs of the year.
1. The Avett Brothers - Laundry Room - A technical 2009 release; it was tough to pick just one song from this album. Laundry Room has some amazing lyrics (tonight I'll burn the lyrics, cuz every chorus was your name), and a ho-down ending that just barely edged ahead of I and Love and You.
2. The Gaslight Anthem - Bring it On - Another great album full of dandies. I had a new favourite song from this album almost every week, but this one was the first.
3. Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill - A perfect spacey dance beat.
4. Aloe Blacc - Femme Fatale - I was always a huge Velvet Underground fan, but never really liked this song. Well done Aloe.
5 . The Black Keys - Everlasting Light - Another song from an album packed with great songs, I could've picked any of them.
pi’s 2009 top 15
Obviously uploading all 15 would take forev...go dl them somewhere else.
#1 - Wilco - The Jolly Banker
Wilco perfectly sum up the year by covering an old Woody Guthrie song and putting it online for free. Good work fellas.
#2 - The Hold Steady - Sequestered in Memphis
Technically a best song of '08, but this whole album has been such a staple around the office for the past year and a half. High marks for Constructive Summer, Magazines and Yeah Sapphire too.
#3 - Beck - Leopard-Skin-Pillbox Hat
Sounds like the Odelay days mixed with the Danger Mouse/Modern Guilt drums.
#4 - Neko Case - Middle Cyclone
Another album full of dandies, this one don't need no back-up band, just Neko and a guitar. Also, by far the best album cover of the year (ever?).
#5 - Modest Mouse - Autumn Beds
From an EP of b-sides, this one maybe should've been an a-side. Isaac Brock signature banjo.
#6 - The Gaslight Anthem - Casanova, Baby!
Another '08 album that's being overplayed around the office.
#7 - Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Zero
obvs.
#8 - Jay-Z - D.O.A.
Could've picked a few songs from the Jigga himself, but this one is fn genius. Obviously the hook blows, but that's the point, right?
#9 - Bruce Springsteen - My Lucky Day
Remember a couple years ago when Arcade Fire was trying to sound like classic Springsteen with a modern twist? Just leave it to the Boss himself.
#10 - The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition
Great album all-around.
#11 - Propagandhi - Dear Coach's Corner
Sweet jesus.
#12 - Monsters of Folk - Losin' Yo Head
Pretty sub-par album, this is a dandy though.
#13 - Radiohead - These are My Twisted Words
Radiohead releases at least one song a year so they can make the year-end wrap up lists every time.
#14 - Phoenix - Lisztomania
obvs
#15 - Bat for Lashes - Pearl's Dream
The video is pretty holler too. Wolfies are cool.
